In 2007 Anthony Grayling wrote Against All Gods, a collection of polemical essays attacking religion. About the Author
A. C. Grayling is Master of the New College of the Humanities, UK. He has written and edited numerous works of philosophy and is the author of biographies of Descartes and William Hazlitt. He believes that philosophy should take an active, useful role in society. He has been a regular contributor to "The Times", "Financial Times", "Observer", "Independent on Sunday", "Economist", "Literary Review", "New Statesman "and "Prospect", and is a frequent and popular contributor to radio and television programmes, including "Newsnight", "Today", "In Our Time", "Start the Week "and "CNN news". He is a Fellow of the World Economic Forum at Davos, and advises on many committees ranging from Drug Testing at Work to human rights groups.

Brief, provocative wisdom.

Two things I like about Grayling: First, he provokes thought. Yes, he makes cogent cases for his views, but seldom ends his essays with "my way or the highway" ultimatums but instead invites the reader to enter profoundly into thinking about whatever topic is at hand. For him, it's all about shaking ideas sufficiently loose so they can be taken in hand, held up to the light, and rotated to view all facets.
And second, he is brief, he is pithy, he leave you wanting more rather than less. Which isn't to exhonerate his occasionally interiminable sentences cluttered to overflowing with pollysyllabic and often Latin words and terms--but at least he doesn't so wear out topics so completely that they are ground into dust.
"Prometheus" is sort of a companion piece to his earlier mini-book, Against All Gods: Six Polemics on Religion and an Essay on Kindness (Oberon Masters), picking up the thread where that one left off. The book is so short that a review of it risks giving away the whole game, so suffice to say that it contains an interesting look at Bertrand Russell and makes a salient case for freeing minds from superstition to pursue reason. He does so with wit and style, as usual. I would suggest, however, that if you consider value to be best obtained on a cents-per-word basis, you might find the work too slight to justify its expense and would perhaps be happier with one of Grayling's longer works...of which I would especially recommend, on similar themes as this one, The Choice of Hercules: Pleasure, Duty and the Good Life in the 21st Century.

Wonderfully written critique

Grayling is known for his elegance and being able to get a point across over a short span of time. In "To Set Prometheus Free," Grayling is writing an extension of his earlier book, "Against All God." Grayling gives the reader insight into why he thinks religion is holding humanity back from achieving greatness.
My favorite chapter had to be the one on Bertrand Russell. Grayling details what Russell thought on religion and how he wanted to create an alternative to religious thought. Not only was I able to read some good critiques of religion, but I was able to get some insight into what Russell thought on the matter.
The book is easily read in one sitting and gives the reader a lot of think about.

Break it up, fellas

This sort of book, whose name is legion, attemps to take on the religious on their own terms. It's on a hiding to nowhere. Let us imagine that those without faith claimed the existence of a hypothetical substance, imperceptible to the senses - call it Sprod - that prevented any supernatural emanations or visitations ('gods' and the like) from ever having been. Now imagine poor embattled churchgoers being challenged to *prove* that Sprod is a fabrication, a delusion! Surreal doesn't cover it. So why put ourselves through these hoops? God is a three-letter word (in English, at least; I've long pondered what His Goddiness calls herself) that means whatever you want it to mean. It is a word on the meaning of which no two believers, if pressed, could ever agree, once they diverged from 'the Party line'*, whose meaning is also studiously ambiguous - postmodern, even. God-addiction is like any other. The 'god-shaped hole' is terribly suggestive of a heroin craving. These guys do not want our help; they need their Sunday fix. If only they'd pipe down about it, so could we. And what would Grayling do then, poor thing? Apart from tilting at windmills - or do I mean sitting ducks? - this also reads in parts like a bad translation: 'where religions are on the back foot'; 'not so kid-gloved'; 'the best account of this owes itself to..'; 'by it hangs a tale' [rather than 'thereby']; 'on its precincts' [rather than 'within']; 'it is worth recurring to the ID debate again' [resorting? returning? how about revisiting, and scrap the 'again'?]. When not summarizing Russell or Hitchens (why?) his arguments are as childish, if not as disingenuous, as those he seeks to refute. Shoddy, parasitic work.
* Folks who said communism ressembled religion spoke wiser than they knew. Both were imposed by a handful of zealots.
