No one has reviewed this yet?!?
By Breck Breckenridge
Well, I must say at the outset that this is a book I currently have on loan from my Spokane library. I discovered no one has reviewed it here on Amazon when I came here looking to buy it and wanting to know what others thought about it! I have not seen alot of aquarium plant books yet, certainly not Hiscock's, which seem to be strongly represented here. Mary Sweeney's book is a little "pocketbook" type (called a turtle?). It is only 11 cm wide by 20 cm long. Very "handy".

As for the contents, I can say two things right off the bat: 1) the text is good to a point but has some problems (see below); 2) the photos are sometimes good and sometimes not so good.

Concerning the text, the plant species are not arranged alphabetically, but rather by some grouping which I have not yet fathomed. This means I have to continually be going back to the index for page numbers of certain species. Granted the editors have given us a "cheat sheet" of genus names and their pages on both insides of front and back covers, but still... Also, the treatments for each species are not equally thorough. We get complete descriptions, etc. for some species in a genus but then the rest get short shrift. Those that get the short comments often do not have their sizes mentioned. This is irritating. I want to at least know how big each plant will get. Granted this is 101 Best so I should be content with that, but I already want more and it is not there.

With regard to the photos, sometimes they are really quite good. Then there are those that aren't. The disparity is sometimes very great. On the whole I would say the photos are good about 80% of the time. Admittedly it must be a b*tch trying to take photos of plants in water!

This book is copyrighted 2008, so it is up-to-date. Its newness may be one reason why the used ones are still commanding new prices, more or less. I was hoping to find a copy cheaply :-) because this will not be my only aquarium plants book. I just started in my interest in having an aquarium that is strongly oriented to plants (I am afterall a botanist), so the fact that I am already having to look in this book and in Barron's Plants for the Aquarium, and am already contemplating getting Hiscock says something about the level "101" is written on.

So I give it a three rating.

Lots of info here, but mainly as a catalog
By Amazon Customer
There are more books written about fish than about plants, so I was glad to buy this one. It is a catalog, not a coffee table book with lots of pretty pictures. The discussion of aquarium ecology that supports plants is very sketchy. The discussion of lighting was up to date, but there was very little about substrates. To the author's credit, at least she acknowleged that there is more than one approach to be taken to substrates. Many books won't do that. My observation has been that you don't need to pay much attention to particular nutrients, fertilizers, or CO2 if you have a suitable substrate. (Hint: avoid undergravel filters)

The "Plant Species to Avoid" section was very useful. It will help a hobbyist avoid the disappointment and effort that comes with replacing non-performing plants. Aquarium stores usually don't sell inappropriate fish because it is bad for long term business. However, they often sell plants that look pretty, but won't last.

Finally, some aquarium plants are considered to be invasive or nuisance species in the wild and are subject to regulation by the Departments of Natural Resources in various states. I would have liked to see more discussion of that issue in the book. It is much too easy and potentially destructive to flush plant prunings down the toilet or toss them out with the trash.

Quite Informative - Good Book!!
By T. Vanover
I too have had a short hiatus from having a fish tank with marginal success with aquatic plants and was seeking plant help. After reading some of the other reviews - I both agree and disagree with parts of the reviews. This book has lived up to and exceeded my expectations. After years of working with formal plant identification (dichotomous keys) books I find this reference material very informative and useable.

I found the following POSITIVE attributes of this book:
- the three different ways of accessing an entry in the book great, user friendly and very 'fathomable'! The plants are sorted by its common name and then by scientific name. For those of who prefer scientific names you'll see that the binomial is noted first, then the common name second.
- plants are also sorted by plant placement in a tank, foreground, midground/small, and background/large plants. The pages within those sections are easily flagged/color coded with light type (bright/medium/low)and then durability (hardy/easy/challenging).
- photographs - The pictures are 'great'. Each plant referenced has a photograph. Photographic technology has come a long way since then, but overall I'm very very pleased with the clear and crisp pictures. I've spent more on other plant books with lower quality of images and paper.
- recommendation of what species to STAY AWAY from is very helpful - We don't want to have one plant monopolize one's tank.
- a variety of essential information - It provides an overview, habitat, native range, maximum height, lighting, water and nutrient preferences. She also notes any important special care, propagation and misc notes an aquatic keeper should be aware of.
- the mention of fish and/or substrate appropriate for a plant

I found the following NEGATIVE attribute of this book:
- its less than 200 pages

I will look for more books by this author.
