In the days following the Battle of Birch Coulie, the decisive battle in the deadly Dakota War of 1862, one of President Lincoln’s private secretaries wrote: “There has hardly been an outbreak so treacherous, so sudden, so bitter, and so bloody, as that which filled the State of Minnesota with sorrow and lamentation.” Even today, at the 150th anniversary of the Dakota War, the battle still raises questions and stirs controversy. In Birch Coulie John Christgau recounts the dramatic events surrounding the battle. American history at its narrative best, his book is also a uniquely balanced and accurate chronicle of this little-understood conflict, one of the most important to roil the American West.
Christgau’s account of the war between white settlers and the Dakota Indians in Minnesota examines two communities torn by internal dissent and external threat, whites and Native Americans equally traumatized by the short and violent war. The book also delves into the aftermath, during which thirty-eight Dakota men were hanged without legal representation or the appearance of defense witnesses, the largest mass execution in American history. With its unusually nuanced perspective, Birch Coulie brings a welcome measure of clarity and insight to a critical moment in the troubled history of the American West.

Review
“Birch Coulie is a great re-telling of a great story. Birch Coulie accurately captures not only the events leading up to this historic battle, but also the emotions of its participants. Christgau seems to understand the depth of Dakota frustrations that produced one of the most determined Native attacks on US troops in all of American History.”—Carl Colwell, LTC U.S. Army (Ret.), director of the Renville County (Minnesota) Historical Society and director of the Minnesota Valley History Learning Center (Carl Colwell 2011-09-26)
"[Birch Coulie is] a dramatic narrative that students of frontier and Minnesota history will wish to read closely."—Gilbert Taylor, Booklist (Gilbert Taylor Booklist 2012-02-01)
"Christgau's book is essential reading on the 150th anniversary of the largely forgotten, under-taught war that he describes as "a brutal collision of two worlds and cultures." —Curt Brown, Minneapolis Star Tribune (Curt Brown Minneapolis Star Tribune 2012-03-03)
"With its unusually nuanced perspective, Birch Coulie: The Epic Battle of the Dakota War brings a welcome measure of clarity and insight to a critical moment in the troubled history of the American West, the deadly Dakota War of 1862."—Bob Edmonds, McCormick Messenger (Bob Edmonds McCormick Messenger 2012-03-22)
"John Christgau has captured the facts of the 1862 war and the battle at Birch Coulie in a way that brings them alive to the reader."—Gary Revier, Minnesota's Heritage (Gary Revier Minnesota's Heritage)

Not a good book!
By Paul from Olivia
John Christgau's Birch Coulee was a real disappointment. Purporting to be a nuanced account of a critical battle in Minnesota's Dakota War, filled with measures of clarity and insight, the book is anything but. The author introduces no new sources. His Indians are caricatures, variously overly organized "soldiers" or pitiful "hostiles" (his words, and the latter abandoned by respectable scholars long ago). This is basically the story of a military campaign, but the author is no military historian and his understandings of Old Army command structures, training, ordnance, uniforms, accoutrements, field movements, and campaign support are laughable. He evinces a distorted understanding of Minnesota geography and locates trails and landmarks where they never existed and inserts notions of boulder fields and impassable sloughs for dramatic effect when they never existed either. And his press, a university press no less, added no value whatsoever, somehow failing to correct egregious errors in cardinal direction, the use of the word canon for cannon, and the production of a book with no bibliography or index. Do not seek to acquire this work; if somehow you have, return it.

not entirely objective

This is a decent enough recounting of the Battle of Birch Coulie, but be advised that the book is very sympathetic to the Dakota side of the conflict. The writing is often quite vague and reluctant to get into gritty details. For a more level and detailed account of the Dakota uprising, check out "Over the Earth I Come." "Birch Coulie" treads extremely lightly on the atrocities committed during the Dakota conflict of 1862. The author completely glosses over the widespread Dakota rapes of women settlers and the murder of women and children during the uprising. Late in the book, he devotes a single sentence to these actions, alleging that such behavior was the action of only a few criminals of the Dakota nation, and that thus they are not worth remarking upon, for fear it should stain the reputation of the Sioux people as a whole. It is obvious that Mr. Christgau put his due diligence into researching this book, but the author (with a background in "reconciliation and restitution," as the back cover states) had his own biases going into the project, and the narrative feels sugarcoated in favor of the Dakota perspective.

Civil & Indian War
By James W. Durney
The largest battle you will ever see is when you come under fire. This is an intensely personal experience you will never forget. Later, history might name this experience; even declare it an important event. If this happens, it becomes part of family lore. Your descendents can say "Dad was at Pearl Harbor" or "Uncle Jim landed on Omaha Beach" or "My Great-Great Grandfather was with Chamberlain on Little Round Top". This is a rare experience. Named battles, while important at the time and always important to those involved, normally sink into oblivion ending up in footnotes rarely the subject of a book.
The Civil War has many obscure battles that have no important general or famous regiment on the field. None seem as obscure as Birch Coulie! In fact, the 1862 Sioux War in Minnesota is almost a nonevent. The most important thing about the war might be that the War Department used it to exile General Pope far far from Washington.
Having said all of this: why would anyone want to read this book?
First, it is a unique look at how frontier communities were defended. The "army" that fights this is a collection of regiments in the process of being inducted. Regiments comprised of civilian volunteers or local militia and equally inexperienced volunteer regiments assigned to police the reservation. They are commanded by politicians, local community leaders or semi-trained elected officers from the volunteer regiments.
Next, this battle is small enough to detail the personalities involved giving us a real look at the 1862 Frontier. We can move up and down the Chain of Command making an intensely personal story. Additionally, the events and tactics can be clearly explained making the action easy to follow and understand.
Lastly, the author presents the battle not as a single event but as part of the regional and personal history. This includes following some of the participants throughout their lives and the regions commemorations of the battle.
There are some problems. Sources, at the end of the book, replace endnotes. The sources have a page not item reference. There are no maps, illustrations or photographs. Lastly, the Sioux uprising is notable for two things: first it is the "largest mss execution in American history". This occurs when thirty-eight Sioux were hanged for murder and rape. The second is the largest mass rape in American History. While the author dwells on the executions, he says very little about the rapes.
