River in Ruin: The Story of the Carmel River, by Ray A. March

The thin ribbon of the Carmel River is just thirty-six miles long and no wider in most places than a child can throw a stone. It is the primary water supply for the ever-burgeoning presence of tourists, agriculture, and industry on California’s Monterey Peninsula. It is also one of the top ten endangered rivers in North America. The river’s story, which dramatically unfolds in this book, is an epic tale of exploitation, development, and often unwitting degradation reaching back to the first appearance of Europeans on the pristine peninsula.
River in Ruin is a precise weaving of water history—local and larger—and a natural, social, and environmental narrative of the Carmel River. Ray A. March traces the river’s misuse from 1879 and details how ever more successful promotions of Monterey demanded more and more water, leading to one dam after another. As a result the river was disastrously depleted, cluttered with concrete rubble, and inhospitable to the fish prized by visitors and residents alike.
March’s book is a cautionary tale about squandering precious water resources—about the ultimate cost of a ruined river and the slim but urgent hope of bringing it back to life.

Review

"Saturated with facts, March's account of this threatened river forces readers to reconsider water as a commodity that requires protection."—Kirkus Reviews (Kirkus Reviews 2012-02-01)

"In sharing its struggle so effectively, River in Ruin joins a stream of other exquisitely researched and vividly written books about collapsing western watersheds, works we ignore at our peril."—Colleen Mondor, Booklist  (Colleen Mondor Booklist 2012-02-14)

"The Carmel River and its importance in providing water to the residents of the Monterey Peninsula is a topic all locals should be interested in. March does an excellent job of chronicling the ins and outs of how the river's role has changed over the years, just as its course has sometimes been altered by nature. This very readable and informative paperback is well worth reading."—Robert Walch, The Californian (Robert Walch The Californian 2012-03-30)

"March's treatment of the history, the politics and the personalities involved is heartfelt and personal; several times he consults diaries and includes individual stories (including his own), making the Carmel's story resonate with his readers."—Shelf Awareness (Shelf Awareness 2012-04-06)

"March has put forward a clear explanation of how the Carmel River's problems developed and made a convincing case for urgent action to fix them."—Eric Brazil, SFGate (Eric Brazil SFGate 2012-04-15)

"March may not believe he has the answers, but by detailing a 410-year history we shouldn't forget, he's certainly showing us some of them. It took him 10 years to write River in Ruin, but the river's story over the next five years may prove even more compelling."—Kera Abraham, Monterey County Weekly (Kera Abraham Monterey County Weekly 2012-05-31)

History of Monterey Through a Watery Lens
By Global Prof
I couldn't put this book down.
It tells the history of the Monterey Peninsula based on the Carmel River, the only source of water for the entire area.
I loved learning about how the towns of Monterey, Pacific Grove and Carmel sprang up. It was all made possible by the railroad magnate, Crocker, who built a pipeline around the entire peninsula for his mega-project, the Del Monte Hotel.
If possible, this book made me even more of a water Nazi, terribly worried about how we humans are misusing a precious resource through waste, poor planning and overpopulation.
Anyone who has lived in Carmel, or is interested in local history, will find this fascinating.

Living in Paradise
By Donna Michelson
Although Ray March's book, RIVER IN RUIN, is about the processes that led to the ruination of the Carmel River, it is also an excellent metaphor for the current governmental tactics used in 'fueling the public's imagination' to perceive the State of California as a paradisiacal state of unlimited abundance, especially the abundance of drinkable water. Ray March factually dispels this world of appearances in exchange for a different reality, the truth. The truth that our water sources are at risk every day, threatened by the dangers of pollution and fires; a preventable risk caused by the fact that we as a State and Nation are out of touch with where our water comes from and, more importantly, how it is delivered to us. This book is well written and entertaining. A must read before you reach for that next glass of water.

River in Ruin
By John W. Frost
Ray March has done a very difficult thing; he has written a short book that is easy to read about a complicated subject. Years of research synthesized by his journalist's eye and personal passion have brought to us a book that we simply cannot ignore. Free of political rancor and the conservationist's easy shibboleths---global warming, ozone layers, etc.---March tells us why it is that a river he knew as a boy is no longer there. Variations of this story are being repeated throughout western America (think the Colorado river) and around the globe (think the Elbe in the Czech Republic). If you care at all about your surroundings then River in Ruin should be at the top of your reading list.
