The best stories create traditions, and this novel by celebrated Native American writer Gerald Vizenor is a marvelous conjunction of trickster stories and literary ingenuity. Chair of Tears is funny, fierce, ironic, and deadly serious, a sendup of sacred poses, cultural pretensions, and familiar places from reservations to universities. The novel begins with generous stories about Captain Eighty, his young wife, the poker-playing genius named Quiver, and their children and grandchildren who live on a rustic houseboat.
Captain Shammer, an extraordinary grandson reared on the houseboat and with no formal education, is appointed the chairman of a troubled Department of Native American Indian Studies at a prominent university. Shammer is a natural enterpriser and ironic showman in the tradition of trickster stories. He arrives at the first faculty meeting dressed in the uniform of Gen. George Armstrong Custer. Native students celebrate his conversion of the department into an academic poker parlor and casino, and a panic radio station. The most sensational enterprise is the training of service mongrels to detect the absence of irony.
An irresistible novel of original ideas, Chair of Tears gets to the heart of questions about identity politics, multiculturalism, pedantry, and timely virtues.

Very challenging, but excellent!
By amaya
Chair of Tears is a very complex novel filled with different theoretical approaches to native survivance, one of the main themes in Gerald Vizenor’s writing. Survivance, as explained by Vizenor, is a practice that remains crucial in order to eliminate native victimry, nihility, and this fallacy of native absence. This is not a novel that can only be read once. Although it is filled with sinicism and irony, it is also very dense at times and introduces certain information that the reader may not understand right away. Furthermore, if you have no prior knowledge of Native American culture and have read almost no literature surrounding it, I would not recommend this novel to be the first novel you read in attempt to expand your knowledge. Although it is a genius and quite unique piece of writing, it is highly confusing and often shut me down. The novel centers on the main character, Chaplain Shammer, and his decisions as the new Chair to improve of the department of Native American Studies at the University of Minnesota. Being the seventh chairman to be appointed the job after the failures of the previous ‘educated’ six; Shammer has no recognized “qualifications” or “degrees” and yet, as a native, storier, and traditionalist, he provides refreshing and beneficial ways to revive the meaning and survival of the department that no other chairman was able to do.
Through Chair of Tears, Vizenor mocks and sometimes totally shuts down other authors of Native American literature. This is in an attempt to stress certain points about the lack of native irony in literature and therefore, a failure to achieve survivance by solely writing what wants to be read and reinforcing the stereotypical image of the Native American. I had never heard of many of the authors that Vizenor mocked and so it was difficult for me to understand the irony or the humor in why Vizenor outwardly disliked them.
Through hilarious scenes in the novel involving an array of fictional characters, Vizenor was able to stress the importance of a good sense of humor surrounding difficult native realities. By recognizing these native realities and representing them externally or orally in an ironic way, Shammer’s fictional encouragements of his native students in this book allow the reader to slowly understand Vizenor’s meaning and purpose for writing Chair of Tears. This novel encourages deep thought and although stressful to read at times, the reader is able learn from Vizenor’s theoretical examples in many different scenes throughout the book, to successfully achieve the practice of native survivance.
After reading Chair of Tears, there is no doubt that I will constantly refer back to Gerald Vizenor and “what he would think” every single time I read Native American Literature. This piece of writing has completely changed the way I perceive native cultures, history, survivance, as well as native literature as a whole. I would recommend this novel to anyone with an interest or basic knowledge in Native American culture, history, and survivance and who is willing to patiently and thoroughly read this novel knowing that its complete understanding is very difficult, if not impossible to achieve. I guarantee that you will never look at Native American culture or the meaning of native literature the same way again.
