Jules Verne was born in 1828 into a French lawyering family in the Atlantic coastal city of Nantes. Though his father sent him off to a Paris law school, young Jules had been writing on the side since his early teens, and his pet topics were the theater, travel, and science. Predictably enough, his legal studies led nowhere, so Verne took a day job with a stock brokerage, in his off-hours penning scripts for farces and musical comedies while also publishing short stories and novelettes of scientific exploration and adventure.
His big breakthrough came when he combined his theatrical knack with his scientific bent and in 1863 published an African adventure yarn, Five Weeks in a Balloon. After that and until his death in 1905, Jules Verne was one of the planet’s best-loved and best-selling novelists, publishing more than sixty books. Other imaginative favorites by him include The Mysterious Island, Hector Servadac, The Begum’s Millions, Master of the World, and The Meteor Hunt. Verne ranks among the five most translated authors in history, along with Mark Twain and the Bible.
Frederick Paul Walter is a scriptwriter, broadcaster, librarian, and amateur paleontologist. A long-standing member of the North American Jules Verne Society, he served as its vice president from 2000 to 2008. Walter has produced many media programs, articles, reviews, and papers on aspects of Jules Verne and has translated many Verne novels, including Amazing Journeys: Five Visionary Classics, also published by SUNY Press. He lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

A long-standing member of the North American Jules Verne Society, he served as its vice president from 2000 to 2008. AMAZING NETHERWORLD JOURNEY

In his only novel THE NARRATIVE OF ARTHUR GORDON PYM (1838), American storyteller Edgar Allan Poe stirred up endless scholarly controversies by quitting in midair - he abandoned his characters at the brink of misty, mysterious Antarctica.
Which, in turn, inspired a response from an equally famous rival, Frenchman Jules Verne. Written sixty years later, Verne's novel THE SPHINX OF THE ICE REALM (1897) doesn't aim to tie up Poe's loose ends ... instead, it borrows some of his characters and runs them through a new series of hair-raising adventures - driving far deeper into the Antarctic and carrying out a spooky, scarifying voyage across the bottom of the world!
In France SPHINX remains one of Verne's most acclaimed achievements - but in the USA until now, it has been available only in a drastically abridged translation called "An Antarctic Mystery," a version that eliminates over a third of Verne's original text. So this new edition from SUNY Press is the first complete translation in our language.
Prepared by U.S. Verne scholar Frederick Paul Walter, the new translation is in lively modern English, plus Walter includes plenty of intriguing extras - notes on Verne's manuscript for this tale ... on the French 1st edition ... on the abortive earlier translation. Modern vernacular used for this edition

There are many things right about this volume of Verne’s THE SPHINX OF THE ICE REALM. First, it’s available! Until recently, this hasn’t been an easy one to track down. That this novel is available to read is a good thing. (You be the judge as to whether the novel itself is good or not. I personally think it’s typical of Verne’s later works. Worth checking out if you are interested in Verne or Poe, but not one of Verne’s best.) This edition includes Poe’s THE NARRATIVE OF ARTHUR GORDON PYM as an appendix. It includes many original illustrations. There are notes and commentary. In general, a handsome edition of a hard-to-find Verne work.
However, what isn’t right is the translation. It’s an irony, since the translator and editor Frederick Paul Walter takes up considerable space, in an introductory piece and in the textual notes at the back, lambasting previous English translations of this work (and doubtless he was correct in doing so). But I find it particularly irritating that after all his criticism of previous translators, he doesn’t seem to understand this, which I think should be one of the main objectives of a translator: that it is not enough to make a translation that is complete and “accurate” as to plot and science, but it must also reflect something of the time, place, culture, sensibility, etc. of the author who originally wrote it. It should appear to have something of the “flavor” of the original so that the reader can find their way into that particular world of the author. (An example of this done well is the Moncrieff/Kilmartin translation of Proust.) Mr. Walter’s version of THE SPHINX OF THE ICE REALM does quite the opposite. His word choice actually prevented me from entering the world of Jules Verne!
Some may disagree, but I think Mr. Walter has possibly committed a more grievous translating sin than those he critiques. He has taken a 19th century French author and rendered him into a hard-boiled type of American English more appropriate to pulpy detective fiction or film noir! His choice of words was frequently so wrong - so egregiously modern and American – that I was brought out of the story and forced to stop and gnash my teeth for a bit before moving on to the next inappropriate intrusion of 20th century American colloquialism. And unfortunately the book is filled with this nonsense.
This is the sort of language I’m talking about: “keeps himself under wraps”; “plopped down”; “take it or leave it”; “gasbag”; “kicked the bucket”; “scramming”; “bite the bullet”; “would have been a goner”; “johnny-on-spot”; “dunno”; “no slouch when it came to …”; “smacking Hearne upside the head”; “I hopped on it” (meaning “I got busy”); “worth taking to the bank”; “iffy”; “riled up”; “confabs”; “go with the flow”, etc. It infects both the spoken dialogue of the novel as well as the expository passages. It is all through the book, from page one to the end. Such language sounds like it is coming out of the mouths of Edward G. Robinson or The Bowery Boys. Reading this type of stuff actually made me angry with the translator’s assumption of superiority regarding the older versions of this novel. He really has no right to adopt that attitude, seeing what he has done to the book in this version.
I’m afraid my problem with this translation overshadowed everything else regarding the novel. Whether the story was exciting, whether it was an interesting sequel to Poe’s novel, whether the science was good or the novel complete, whether Verne’s humor came through – all that became secondary and irrelevant because all I could focus on during my reading was the completely inappropriate word choices of the translator.
