A fabulous and entertaining read.

Most cheese books, admittedly, can be about as dry as a musty attic and as entertaining as watching the other kids who aren't yours at a school talent show. Yes, they might be informative, they might be packed full of bucolic pictures, but these epic dairy datamines are made for reference and not leisurely education or reading. The great Fromagian Library has been needing--craving--something more accessible that the everyday cheese lover, curd nerd, and Robiola novice can pick up.

Kirstin Jackson has delivered it with her ticklish new tome, It's Not You, It's Brie: Unwrapping America's Unique Culture of Cheese. It's Not You, It's Brie, eponymously named after Jackson's blog, is a whimsical, pop-culture joyride through America's dairylands exploring a bevy of cheeses that--like a season cliffhanger to your favorite show--will leave you hungering for more.

Jackson's book is an in-depth and engaging look at more than 50 artisanal and farmstead American cheeses. While this approach to exploring food isn't novel or new, it's often poorly done. Descriptions can get repetitive and accurately portraying the unique places and people behind a food can often come across as mushy, ersatz, or just plain boring. Jackson is an epic painter of scenery, cheesemakers, and the cheeses they produce.

The cheeses are categorized in a rather unexpected fashion. All too often, cheesewriters try to compartmentalize the complex world of cheese into anywhere between five to eight categories. Jackson breaks the cheese mold and offers range to better explain the varieties: mixed milk, leaf wrapped, Alpine influenced, goudas, and old wheels all get a chance to shine for their own characteristics as opposed to being grouped by age alone.

The book has no pictures. Instead, clever and accurate ink illustrations by artist, Summer Pierre, dot its landscape. And while no pictures may be a con in many people's minds, the lack of pictures doesn't take away from the usefulness of this book. A picture might be worth a thousand words, but each of Kirsten's words are worth a thousand more to the average writer.

Brie is a welcome addition to any cheese library and definite book to keep on your nightstand next to a plate of creamy Scholten Weybridge and toasts.

Excellent Educational Book on American Cheese

The author's blog has been a great educational resource for me over the years as I've learned about cheese. The book is no different - her ability to explain cheese in a non-boring narrative manner persists. I like this book because it's a nice read, and you're actually learning something. And for once, you can actually eat the fruits of your education.

About the Author

Theo Dombrowski is an artist, writer, kayaker, hiker, mountain biker and skier. He worked in international education for most of his career, primarily at Lester Pearson College, near Victoria, BC. Along with two guidebooks published by RMB | Rocky Mountain Books, Popular Day Hikes 4: Vancouver Island and Seaside Walks on Vancouver Island, he has also worked with Heritage House Publishing as the author of the Secret Beaches series of guidebooks and as the illustrator for two children's books, Quests for Fire: Tales from Many Lands and A Book of Tricksters: Tales from Many Lands. He donates some of the profits from his book projects to charity, principally the Georgia Strait Alliance and Médecins sans frontières (MSF) International. He lives in Nanoose Bay, British Columbia.

Good Introduction to Pinterest ~ Marketing

If you want an introduction to Pinterest and to expanding your business with the aid of this social media tool, this is a well-designed, accessible book for basic concepts. I liked the physical design of the book for clarity. Good graphics, checks, tips, light and dark print so it's well formatted.

I bought several copies of this book to use for a tutorial for a client who has a clothing design business who knows nothing about pinterest and wants help setting up her profile, naming and organizing her boards, pinning images, following leaders in her business, transporting images from design websites, blogs, magazine sites and repinning others' images.

What I liked about the book is that it is written for the beginner and it has tips for marketing your business so you get two for the price of one. I have been using Pinterest for about 6 months for my interior design classes that I teach. I use pinterest to catalog and store images which I use in class. I have 40,000 images stored on Pinterest, and over 6000 followers who follow my boards, but I still learned some essential concepts reading this book as I never read any how-to's on Pinterest. I found some gaps in my knowledge of Pinterest which this book filled in.

I've been stumbling along through trial and error, but when you are being paid to teach someone, felt I needed to find out what I hadn't discovered on my own. And there were some key activities this book taught me. It was helpful to have a couple of copies so I could send the student home with the book for homework help as she sets up her boards until our next session.

I found my personal experience on pinterest corroborated what the author suggests in this book as to what works, what doesn't and general pin dynamics. Pinterest is constantly upgrading and improving, so one suggestion which the author had as to following ALL of someone's boards and then unfollowing the ones you don't want to ensure you show up as a follower of theirs I don't do. Usually there are only a few boards in each profile I am interested in for my students, so I just follow those boards and it appears that I still show up as a follower of theirs when I checked. So, Pinterest may have changed that feature since this book was written.

As an introductory book, I found this book very helpful. I found it a very accessible read.

I was disappointed right away when the book tells how to get invited to Pinterest. It is my understanding that an invitation to join is no longer necessary. I simply followed the instructions on Pinterest to join. The rest of the book was not particularly easy to follow. I'm not fond of detailed instructions found in the average owner manuals or online tutorials and had hoped this book would help. So far I'm learning how to use Pinterest on my own by trial and error.

If you're looking for Yiddish in a book

The Yiddish language (Billy Crystal says Yiddish is a mixture of German and phlegm!!!) is interspersed all through this book and if you grew up hearing that language then you will definitely enjoy the use of it. It's about an American woman who wants to get in touch with her family history in Lithuania. Of course the Holocaust plays a huge part in her discoveries. It isn't the best written book and I was a bit bored, but I loved the interspersing of Yiddish throughout.

Remembering the Holocaust in Contemporary Lithuania

In this beautifully written first person narrative Cassedy refuses simple truisms about what it means to "never forget the Holocaust." As she explores her own family's Jewish past, she struggles to learn Yiddish and get to know the broader cultural landscape that is contemporary Lithuania, the place where her family came from. None of this is easy or simple. For Cassedy the past and its ongoing relationship to the present are critical. Yiddish becomes a way for her to appreciate these complexities. Here Yiddish literature animates every part of the story she tells. And, in so doing, Cassedy uses this literature to help us consider the grey and cloudy space of the present where different legacies of trauma and loss are intermingled. These legacies are, as she reminds us, lived out every day in this place. Cassedy resist making these different legacies somehow equivalent. Instead she helps readers appreciate the horrors that continue to haunt any attempt to come to terms with the Holocaust in Lithuania in the present. She asks us to appreciate those precious efforts that have been made to do this with some integrity even as she shows us how difficult this can be. As she makes clear in the broader cultural climate in Lithuania the Holocaust is increasingly overshadowed by the legacy of Soviet occupation as if one trauma can take the place of another. She resists this logic. Part of what is inspiring about Cassedy's approach is that she looks to past with humility and great compassion to help us imagine a different future even in this fraught terrain.

Facing a Painful Past to Build a Better Future

In We Are Here author Ellen Cassedy addresses with thoroughness and sensitivity disturbingly complex events of WWII taking place as Nazis and Soviets in turn ravaged Lithuania. As a journalist, Cassedy brings a keen questioning mind and relentless pursuit of facts. As a human being and family member of individuals caught up in these events she delves into an ever widening and ever horrifying circle of data via interviews and archived documents, carefully recording her findings even as she deals with her own powerful emotions.

Strong feelings rightly exist about these decades-old events, and We Are Here is sure to elicit strong views. But clearly We Are Here, besides elucidating important historical events, raises moral questions we all must ask, not only about events of the past century, but those occurring right up to this very day. What is our human obligation towards others in distress? Can we ever, in good conscience, look the other way?

We Are Here grapples with these questions and more, addressing a painful history in order to build a better future.

This book rocks

Well DavidJi gets all five stars from me for this great book. I stayed up late so I could start reading it as soon as Amazon downloaded it unto my IPad.(it was worth the wait) Then I stayed awake most of the night enjoying my copy of his book, I just did not want to put it down. David is so informative and at the same time playful.
I recommend SECRETS OF MEDITATION to everyone, you will not regret it and it could change your life as mine has changed when I started to listen to his guided meditations.

Excellent book to understand the benefits of meditation in your daily life!

The first thing that called my attention when I received this book and started leafing through it was a comment most readers will miss: "The author donates all proceeds from this book to charity". How would you not want to read a book whose author is so caring and giving? It showed me that every page of this book is filled with hearty advice and a genuine desire to help the reader achieve a state of deep meditation and understand the benefits of this ancient practice.

The language is easy to follow, davidji is down to earth, engaging, and guides the readers in a very interesting path highlighting different types of meditation techniques and what to expect from each of the meditation styles. He tells his own story about his spiritual journey and illustrates it with many examples on how he achieved his proficiency in meditation.

It is the first time I read davidji and I'm hooked! It's not easy to follow a book about meditation, it becomes dull and boring at times, however, this book is exciting and inspiring! It's a great read and will really prompt you to try meditation. You can choose one that fits you better from the different kinds described in this volume: bodymind, visual, sound, energy, sensory, Buddhist, mantra and chanting meditation. Each is described in detail and each chapter explores the best technique on how to practice them, with very helpful hints and encouragement.

At the end of the book, davidji explores the myths around meditation and demystifies some beliefs about its practice, with accessible and easy to understand questions and answers.

This is a great book for those who want to start exploring the benefits of meditation and also for those who have been already practicing it. If you're serious about understanding what meditation is and how it can transform you, don't miss this jewel of inspiration and guidance to a better lifestyle!

davidji's knowledge and experience of such a broad range of meditative practices really helps fill the "gap" of understanding not only the benefits of meditation, but how to find what is right for each person. His personality, wit, and kindness help the reader relate in a fun and practical way. davidji brings just the right amount of scientific support combined with ageless wisdom to a much needed user friendly and applicable book. This is a must read for anyone interested in meditation....and especially for everyone else.
