Buck Ewing: A Baseball Biography, by Roy Kerr

Buck Ewing (1859-1906) was regarded by contemporaries as the greatest catcher and all-around player of his era. A lifetime .300-hitter, he played every position on the diamond and led the league in fielding at two different positions. The first National League hitter to reach double digits in home runs, Ewing once stole six bases in a game, pioneered the snap forearm throw to catch runners napping, averaged 35 steals a season, and is the only catcher to lead his team in stolen bases (53 in 1888).
Off the field, Ewing's personality proved as multifaceted as his playing skills. Considered both affable and modest, he still received criticism from fellow players for negotiating contracts directly with the National League and was wrongly accused of faking injuries. This revealing biography provides a detailed exploration of Ewing's life and career, shedding new light on one of baseball's most talented and versatile players.

A Case of Battery Theft
By John Santosuosso
Everyone knows a catcher cannot steal home. However, Buck Ewing did it more than once. He also led his team in stolen bases for an entire season, and stole three bases in a single game several times. When not catching or pilfering bases, you might find him at the other end of the battery, pitching, or playing any of the other eight positions on a baseball team. In addition he was a highly successful field captain and team manager, one known for his skill in making trades.
Ewing's statistics are amazing, but despite the game's followers love of such numbers, baseball is played not by statisticians but by real athletes. Roy Kerr knows the statistics but uncovers the rest of Buck Ewing as well. Here is the man who used his baseball talent to escape the drudgery awaiting the vast majority of working class males in the nineteenth century who labored long hours for meager wages in factories, mills, distilleries, breweries, mines, and on farms. Despite his records on the diamond, he had to overcome frequent severe criticsm in the press, and a reoccuring illness that would eventually claim him before his time. He left his mark on the game in other ways by being the first major league catcher to use a catcher's mitt, although his earlier playing career often saw him, like every other regular catcher of the era, brusied and battered due to a lack of protective equipment. Kerr shows us Ewing's love of the game by including the article he wrote to help young boys improve their baseball skills at every position. .Although much of his career was with the New York Giants, Buck was a proud resident of Cincinnati and a good family man.
Roy Kerr has once again brought a forgotten hero of the nineteenth century back to life. He has shown us how these "Base Ball" pioneers shaped it and played it, thus laying the foundation for the game so many of us know and love today..
