Rise and Fall of the Carbon Civilisation (Green Energy and Technology), by Patrick Moriarty, Damon Honnery

A vast amount has been written on climate change and what should be our response. Rise and Fall of the Carbon Civilisation suggests that most of this literature takes a far too optimistic position regarding the potential for conventional mitigation solutions to achieve the deep cuts in greenhouse gases necessary in the limited time frame we have available. In addition, global environmental problems, as exemplified by climate change, and global resource problems – such as fossil fuel depletion or fresh water scarcity – have largely been seen as separate issues.

Further, proposals for solution of these problems often focus at the national level, when the problems are global. The authors argue that the various challenges the planet faces are both serious and interconnected. Rise and Fall of the Carbon Civilisation takes a global perspective in its treatment of various solutions:
• renewable energy;
• nuclear energy;
• energy efficiency;
• carbon sequestration; and
• geo-engineering.

It also addresses the possibility that realistic solutions cannot be achieved until the fundamentally ethical question of global equity – both across nations today and also inter-generational – is fully addressed. Such an approach will also involve reorienting the global economy away from an emphasis on growth and toward the direct satisfaction of basic human needs for all the Earth’s people.

Rise and Fall of the Carbon Civilisation is aimed at the many members of the public with an awareness of climate change, but who wish to find out more about how we need to respond to the challenge. It will also be of interest to technical professionals, as well as postgraduate students and researchers, from the environmental and engineering science sectors.

Review

From the reviews:

This is an exceptionally informative book, well structured and well written. Without being too long it covers all the relevant ground thoroughly.

The book is excellent in looking at all the details of energy sources, and shows realism in what is likely to be politically possible. Outstanding in many ways, and it is in sharp contrast to many popular articles and books based on starry-eyed optimism about what technology is likely to deliver.

Andrew Ferguson
Honorary Editor, OPT Journal, Optimisation Population Trust, Manchester UK.

“This brief volume seeks to document the consequences of a carbon-based economy, limitations to continued use of fossil fuels, and solutions to reduce the resulting climate change. It thus encapsulates information from the IPCC reports. … This work contains a wealth of interesting material … . The book’s structure is coherent and systematic; the index appears accurate. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-division undergraduates, two-year technical program students, general readers.” (S. C. Pryor, Choice, Vol. 48 (8), April, 2011)

“Key aspects of global environmental and resource problems and their technical mitigation solutions are considered in this book. It provides a valuable background for anybody who is interested in global climate change and its challenges. In a very instructive way, even amateurs will obtain an overview of what the possible strategies are to solve these current problems. For students, technical professionals, and researchers … as well as politicians, this book provides a well-structured overview and a lot of valuable references to continue their study.” (Felix Witing and Daniela Thrän, Energy, Sustainability and Society, Vol. 2 (17), 2012)

About the Author

Patrick Moriarty is presently an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Design at Monash University, Australia. For more than three decades he has researched urban transport and urban land-use planning, with emphasis on equity and ecological sustainability issues. More recently, he has become interested in the climate change implications of different fuels/energy sources for both transport and electricity generation. This research is not only future-focussed and interdisciplinary, but also considers problems such as oil depletion and climate change in a global context. For six years in the 1970s, he taught Civil Engineering at Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology in Tanzania, and carried out field research on low-cost housing.

Damon Honnery has been involved in energy related research for more than 25 years. He currently leads the energy research group in the laboratory for Turbulence Research in Aerospace and Combustion in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Monash University, Australia. His major research activities focus on the development and performance of alternative liquid fuels for transport. These activities extend into the broader areas of renewable energy systems and their potential to replace traditional energy sources and mitigate the effects of global warming. Although his focus is primarily technical, he also has a keen interest in policy and policy development, particularly as it relates to energy use and carbon emissions.

A clearly written and unbiased guide to our world's energy challenges, and possible solutions.
By djorlando24
A no-nonsense and clearly written discussion of the energy and resource challenges that we face in the near future. This book gives the reader a clear overview of the planet's resource and energy systems, the present problems that our society faces, and how they might be addressed. It does not assume a great deal of prior knowledge beyond a high school science level, and gives the reader a critical and fair overview of competing solutions to our energy challenges without the political aura which often clouds a logical discussion of such matters. Free of obfuscation, modern society's energy challenges are placed in a stark light and the argument against a 'business as usual' approach to economic growth is evidently shown to not rely upon the ultimate resolution of more contentious debates such as anthropogenic climate change and geopolitical power shifts. These matters need not block the case for the start of a transition to a post-carbon economy. However, the choice of technological and social engineering solutions is difficult, and this book clearly lays out the challenges and practical limitations of various technologies such as nuclear, wind, and solar.

This book is ideally suited for students, teachers and practitioners in technical (science, maths, engineering and IT) disciplines who wish to gain a clear big-picture understanding about the present state of our global energy system and the promises and pitfalls of various solutions to the world's environmental, energy and resource challenges. It is concisely written and easy to follow. The authors' expertise in the matters covered is clear and all material is well-referenced.

One of the most honest and intelligent books available to the public
By Steve
This book is a candid, realistic and well-supported book covering our world's growing energy concerns. Unlike mainstream takes on the subject matter, this book acknowledges the very real issues of global climate change and our hunger for more and more energy. It does not concern itself with the puffery and politics that is rampant in the most accessible sources to the general public. Rather, the authors, who are experts in the issues at hand and well-versed in the alternatives available to curtail further problems, tackle the energy problem and its associated environmental effects from the practical viewpoint of scientists and engineers to paint an honest and thorough picture of what we may face in years to come.

Although the writing may appear to the average reader as somewhat technical at times, the book is very well-written and does not leave out vital scientific principles that are necessary for to gain an informed understanding of the problems we face and their proposed solutions. This makes it a must-read for anybody who is intersted in finding out the reality of global climate change and how we will fuel our future energy needs.
