Aaron Turner returned from the devastating War Between the States to find Texas prostrate under the heel of Yankee soldiers, carpetbaggers and scalawags during Reconstruction. Texans’ rights were swept away in a tide of vengeful reforms only to be regained through much tribulation. The economy of Texas was in shreds. “King Cotton” was dead. Taxes and property appraisals increased to the point where choice land was being confiscated at an astonishing rate. The river bottoms, cane breaks, and prairies were filled with unclaimed longhorn cattle, waiting for any man tough enough to use a rope and a branding iron. Aaron and his friends, like many young Texans, caught these mavericks by the tens of thousands and drove them north to exchange them for Yankee silver dollars. This influx of desperately needed cash kept the hopes of Texans alive until times improved. UP FROM THE ASHES, the sixth book in the Western Quest Series, is the story of how Aaron rose to the challenge of the horrors of Reconstruction and assumed the mantle of family leadership. He met the challenges of crooked politicians, Klansmen, and the loss of political rights with determination and persistence to see the return of a free Texas in 1874. STEPHEN L. TURNER was born a fifth generation son of Texas. His youth was steeped in the history and culture of his heritage. A graduate of Texas Tech School of Medicine, he has practiced pediatrics in rural Plainview, Texas since 1984. Turner is married with two married children. Besides his medical practice and writing, he runs their panhandle ranch. He enjoys training horses and hunting. Dr. Turner is a member of Hood’s Texas Brigade Association, Sons of Confederate Veterans and the Texas Genealogical Society. In 2011, he was inducted into the Western Writer’s of America. His other works include OUT OF THE WILDERNESS, ON THE CAMINO REAL, UNDER TROUBLED SKIES, RIDE FOR THE LONE STAR and ON THE ROAD TO GLORY.

Like I was there...
By Jim Loyd
Stephen Turner has done a great job by continuing the family narrative into the cloudy days of Texas' post-Civil War Reconstruction Era. The story is told in a way that personalizes the difficulties that people of the day faced. Like the preceding volumes in this series, the story is written in a compelling way that makes the reader think "you were there".
Having read the previous volumes, it occurred to me that one of the characteristics that brings strength to the stories through the Turner family's generations is the "can do" attitude. The characters encounter the difficulties of the times with a belief that hard times are just a description of the times, and they choose to pick themselves up, dust off their clothes, and say "what's next?" Throughout Turner's books, the characters live good and honorable lives, generally make good choices, and often reap the benefits of the American dream. Horace Greeley wrote "Go West, young man, go West and grow up with the country" in 1865, but the Turner family was already in the process 200 years before. This book and the series before are definitely on my list to recommend.

Reconstruction -- The way it really was
By Jim H. Ainsworth
In this sixth book of the Western Quest Series, Stephen Turner's ancestors return home from the Civil War to a devastated Texas. Dr. Turner's craft improves with each novel and he takes a major step forward in this one. My last novel takes place during the same time period (also in Texas), so I know something about the time and places, but I still learned more about the period and the people that lived through it when I read this book. Turner's ranching experience and physician credentials are on display as he describes cattle roundups and long cattle drives to Missouri and Kansas. This book has a diverse set of characters that appear at just the right time and place for proper historical perspective and smooth narrative flow. I particularly liked Shelby because of his complexity.\

Fiction, but good Texas history
By Harlan Hague
A novel of post-Civil War Texas. Here are the beginnings of the commercial Texas cattle business when unreconstructed rebels gathered wild longhorns and drove them to railheads over the Sedalia and Chisholm trails. The author, a medical doctor and rancher, is a fifth generation Texan, and I suspect there is a lot of family history here. His characters are richly-developed, some we can admire, like Aaron Turner and his cowboy compatriots, or hate, particularly Governor Davis, the corrupt leader of the Republican state government. This is a good read. A sketch map, showing the Texas locations and the Sedalia and Chisholm trails, would have been helpful. This is the first of three novels that will continue the trials and triumphs of the Turner clan. Do I smell a television mini-series?
