Excellent devotional for teens!

Wonderful for the Teens in your life!

In fact, I've been waiting a long time for a devotional like this to come along. Daniel Darling's Teen People Of The Bible is by far the best Bible study I've ever seen. It's not a watered down "warm fuzzies" version of the Bible for teens, it takes you deeper into The Word and is both challenging and convicting. As I was going through it, I was incredibly blessed and challenged by the life applications.

Another great thing about this devotional is the way it's set up. First, you'll read the theme verse and the passage in the Bible. For example on Day 4, the overall theme is legacy. The teen we're studying is Abel, the verse is Genesis 4:10 and the passage is Genesis 4. You'll have to read the passage and the chapter in order to fully understand the "digging deeper" section. In that section and in the "Just Like You" section we'll see ways to apply what we just learned. At the end of every lesson there is a spot for journaling, which makes you think deeper and also helps you understand the application. There's also a prayer included in every day's lesson that relates directly to what we discovered in scripture that day. Each lesson is only about 2 pages long, which means that it doesn't take 3 hours to complete, and leaves you with something to think about and apply after you close the book.

Teen People Of The Bible is not a "feel good" devotional, but it is definitely one that when applied will change your life and bring you closer to Christ. This is one devotional that I highly recommend.

TEEN PEOPLE OF THE BIBLE is, without a doubt, geared towards Christian young adults. That being said, though, I think that the appeal of the book will cross over to both the old and the young, the church-going and the non. Although its layout is that of a daily devotional meant to be used alongside the Bible, it can also be used as a simple reference guide that is both accurate and entertaining in the way it gets its message across -- and that is its greatest strength.

Historical figures were not perfect, and this applies even to those whose stories are narrated throughout the Bible. I think people, mainly younger people, forget that the men and women who lived before, during, and after the time of Christ were fallible humans just as we are. Everyone is a sinner, and the youth of the Bible were no exception. From an arrogant (but well-meaning) Moses to a self-sacrificing (yet sometimes still annoyed) Jeremiah, there were teens and adults who served Christ imperfectly.

This is a book meant to be used daily, with "journal" type spots to work through scenarios and to jot down your thoughts. There is an abundance of Biblical verses that you can use to study further, along with a "did you know?" section, a deeper delve into each scripture and character, and a daily prayer.

All in all, TEEN PEOPLE OF THE BIBLE is a must-have for Christian teens, but it's also a "you might want to check this out" for every teen, regardless of whether they're a Christian or not.

We can lean on nothing but God's truth for real victory's in our lives. Not advice from the knowledgeable people on television or radio. Not fables and old-wives sayings. Not from our own understanding. But the word of God always is true and more than strong enough to handle whatever we're facing.

An enlightening story of forward movement, change and hope.

Having moved to LA in 1973, I resonated deeply with the main characater, Sandra. Although the elements of her journey have a timeless quality, the years in LA Sandra experiences captures the unique flavor of this town as it began to move full speed into the 'Alternative Movement'. The I Ching, amongst many other eastern traditions were taking LA by storm and those of us with a spiritual curiosity had a cornucopia of methodologies to experience. Sandra's search is one similar to myself and many of my friends at the time, including a life as an actor. Sandra's journey reminds us of the importance of having an open mind, being tenacious and always willing to show up and give our best. Letting go and moving on is the lesson, and with a little luck, great mentors appear on the way to guide us. Now, after many years as a counselor, I will recommend this book to my female clients as its lessons hold an infinite value for developing discernment and opening our hearts.

Stayed up way too late night after night because I couldn't put it down. The story grabs you right from the first page and doesn't let go. I could relate to so much of what the main character Sandra Billings went through even though I'm much older and not an actress. The themes of love and loss, confidence and self-doubt, trust and mistrust ... are handled in such an engaging and entertaining way that you can't help reflecting on your own life more deeply. I especially loved the scenes where the author's evocative descriptions of the actor's process gave me a taste of what it might be like to be one. Highly recommend!

Pushing Upward Will Make You Laugh and Squirm!

What a deep ocean of truth in this book...Sandra bares her loving wounded heart, her dark side of bulimia, her raging ambition and breathtaking talent. She is so familiar and real with her beauty and ugliness, the book made me laugh and squirm and ponder my self. Obviously, the I CHING is a valuable friend - it always mirrors the dark and light of our personal truth - how could it not? An excellent story for any young woman to read and learn much about her own inner drives. I would love to see this as a film - this would be MUCH better, more believable and exciting than Eat Pray Love! Great job Ms. Adler!

About the Author

Rudolf A. Raff is James H. Rudy Professor of Biology at Indiana University and one of the founders of the field of evolutionary developmental biology (evo-devo). He is director of the Indiana Molecular Biology Institute, editor-in-chief of Evolution & Development, Guggenheim Fellow, Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is author of The Shape of Life: Genes, Development, and Evolution of Animal Form and author (with Thom Kaufman) of Embryos, Genes, and Evolution.

Enlightening Facts and Histories...Sobering Warnings

In his book "Once We All Had Gills" Rudolph Raff gives equal parts to his formative years, his discoveries over more than four decades of teaching and research and to the very real perils that we as a world community could face if drastic and practical steps to preserve our planet are not taken now. As a lay person I found the volume personally enlightening blended with history, facts and humor. This is a work I can heartily recommend to anyone whose understanding of evolution is limited but also to those who find science, research and education to be a fascinating subject. It should be required reading in schools and universities nationwide.

Interesting till the End

Good, interesting book well written. Unfortunately the author can't, and should have resisted, going into a lengthy, "what's wrong with the world". Better to stick to his biography and science, and leave out the classic liberal opinions. Although I generally agree with him, this book is the wrong place to vent. Write still another essay on the subject and leave it out of this otherwise fine book.

After receiving this book and making a casual reading of this book, I realized that it virtually has nothing to do with evolutionary biology or even biology for that matter. This book is a ramable through the authors youthful experiences and
political views about evolution and creationism. Please don't waste your money on this book. If your looking for a good book

Victoria Lynn Schmidt is an author, instructor, and authority on creativity. Her books for Writer’s Digest include 45 Master Characters, Story Structure Architect, and the best-selling Book in a Month. These three titles show readers how to hone their craft and reach their dream of writing a book or screenplay.

Victoria began her career as a screenwriter for film and television. She is a graduate from the prestigious film program at UCLA, holds a master's degree in screenwriting from Loyola Marymount University and a doctorate in psychology. She also attended film school at NYU and studied independent filmmaking in NYC with some of the top artists in the field. She was awarded the Rocco Viglietta scholarship for creativity, a full Regents Scholarship to UCLA and she is a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society. Archetypes need to be modernized

I purchased two books on archetypes over the past few days, this one (45 Master Characters) and The Complete Writer's Guide to Heroes and Heroines: Sixteen Master Archetypes (Heroes and Heroines). I returned this book and kept the latter instead.

First, let me address the fact that 45 Master Characters claims to include information about 45 archetypes, while Heroes and Heroines claims to include only sixteen. This is misleading. Both books describe 16 archetypes for main characters, 8 being masculine archetypes and 8 being feminine archetypes. (Of course, all are adaptable for either sex, but the male and female archetypes are largely parallel anyway.) 45 Master Characters very briefly touches on an additional 29 archetypes for supporting characters, but these are touched on so briefly that they look a lot more like stereotypes than archetypes. In my opinion, if I want your supporting characters to be well-rounded (which I do), I'd apply the main archetypes to them and ignore the 29 others.

The sixteen primary archetypes addressed in each of these books are similar when the ones in one book are compared to those of the other. However, the versions of these archetypes on Heroes and Heroines have been modernized. In 45 Master Characters, each archetype is based on a mythological god or goddess, and they are described as being extremes, which those gods and goddesses are. 45 Master Characters presents some basic goals, fears, and character arcs for each archetype, but despite this, the archetypes still come across sounding archaic to me. More specifically, each of the female archetypes seemed designed around how they fit into a male world, and how their femininity and sexuality is expressed. There was very little about these archetypes outside of how they relate to men and living in a male-dominated world. In short, it was difficult for me to imagine how those archetypes applied to my writings.

In contrast, Heroes and Heroines speaks of the archetypes in modern terms, and explains them in a fashion that seems much more relevant to every day life. Heroes and Heroines also describes, for each archetype, variations of childhood upbringings that may result in a person of that archetype. It also presents possible jobs that may suit the archetype's personality.

Both books include some additional material related to characterization on top of presenting the archetypes. Heroes and Heroines also goes into how to combine archetypes into a single character, and how casts can be made up of certain common archetype combinations. For my personal needs, I found this more useful than the character arcs and plotting tips 45 Characters gives regarding its archetypes.

The Ultimate Character Bible

Without a doubt, Victoria Schmidt's revised edition of "45 Master Characters" is the best character reference guide I own. Not only does the book go into depth about the different archetypes like it promises, the book also gives you access to an additional 46th character you can download off of the Writer's Digest website, and it also has a chapter on creating plots. The book is divided as follows:

Part I: Getting Started
Part II: Creating Female Heroes and Villains
Part III: Creating Male Heroes and Villains
Part IV: Creating Supporting Characters
Part V: Creating Feminine and Masculine Journeys
There is also an index and appendix at the back of the book, the latter being quite useful if the reader/writer decides to follow Schmidt's advice on plot arcs.

The first part, Getting Started, is a short part, but also quite useful. Besides the author providing a clear distinction between archetypes and stereotypes, Schmidt also has a handy little character questionnaire. Normally, I'm not too keen when I have to answer questions like, "what is your character's favourite colour and why?" but the questions in the questionnaire are designed to help the aspiring writer see archetypal patterns in the character, which will help him/her define what their characters' dominant archetype is. She also has a list of motivating factors.

The next two parts of the book are real gems. They are PACKED with information on potential backstories for each archetype, character flaws, fears, motivations, how other characters might perceive this character (both positive and negative views), and more. I also love how the author made a "good side" of the archetype and an antagonistical side. For example, with the goddess Demeter, her good side is The Nurturer but her villainous side is the Over-Controlling Mother. On the topic of Demeter and other gods and goddesses, I especially love how the author decided to base the archetypes on mythic models. This makes it extremely easy to visualise what the characters may be like, and also makes remembering the various archetypes easier than they would be without a mythic base. At the end of each chapter, Schmidt provides a list of literary, historical, TV and movie examples for the archetype just described. I find it especially interesting how even though there are so many characters based on the same archetype, there are still many different characters that can spring from that foundation. For example, I never would've guessed that both Captain Kirk (Star Trek) and Jerry Springer (Seinfeld) were both based on Zeus' archetype. These two sections of the book are super helpful when it comes to laying down the basic foundations of one's character(s).

Part IV, Creating Supporting Characters, is just as helpful as Part II and III. The author not only goes on to explain the main archetypes for friends and rivals, but also talks about symbolism. Personally, I'm not the type of writer who actively seeks out placing symbolic characters throughout my manuscript, but I will find this section useful when asked to do a novel study for a class or when asked to write a short piece of literary prose.

The last part of the book is badly mislabelled, being called The Feminine and Masculine Journeys. When I first got to this part, I was very confused, wondering if there was a difference in the journeys male and female protagonists must go on. There might be a slight difference, but when the author started going deeper into her explanation, I realised she was talking about something else. This part could also be renamed to Plot Driven vs Character Driven Stories, Literary vs Commercial Fiction, and several other names. The fact that she labelled these fiction styles as Feminine and Masculine Journeys might not bother some people, but even if it does, don't let that stop you from thinking this is a good book. However, in terms of content for this particular part, I found nothing that especially stood out to me. Every piece of information I was reading I could easily find in another book on plot, such as James Scott Bell's "Plot and Structure" and Larry Brook's "Story Engineering." The advice on structure was very formulaic, but at the same time, I agree with pretty much everything she noted. Nonetheless, I would still find the last section of the book a lot more helpful if I were writing a movie script.

So if the book is this amazing, you might be wondering why I only gave it four stars. The answer is the feminism. To be honest, I found that the character archetypes being separated into male and female categories unnecessary and annoying. While flipping through the pages in the book store, I felt it was okay that Aphrodite and Artemis acted the way they did, but when I got to Athena, I was also annoyed. Being the only female archetype who is a business women, part of her motivating factors involved "wanting to fit in with the boy's club." Um...what? Knowing a couple female professionals in private industry, I can definitely say that they did not become business women because they wanted to "prove they [were] equal to men," but because they love what they do. The feminism and sexism doesn't stop at these three goddesses. Obviously, these archetypes will also just be a basic foundation.

Overall, I definitely got my $17.06 money's worth from this book. I read it from cover to cover in about a day and discovered a WEALTH of information. It's sitting on my desk along with my other character references (Writer's Guide to Character Traits and Nancy Kress' Dynamic Characters), but this will be the one I'll refer back to most often.

The verdict? Buy this book. It will sharpen your characters into three-dimensional ones and do wonders for your plot. Just be warned about the stuff I mentioned.

I was really taken aback by this book, because it came highly recommended as a character building writing tool, but the truth is that this book is an exercise to see if the author can write enough words to sell a book. This is an updated version too, but I think the most recent reference is about the show Will and Grace. Come on. You would think that an author with as long a laundry lis of works as this lady likes us to believe she has wouldn't have to resort to repeating herself as much as she does to fill space. Her breakdowns are sparse, yet somehow all over the place, and in some places offputtingly and unnecessarily spiritual. I'm trying to learn how archetypes relate to creating characters that fit into just about any modern screenplay, and she describes several of her archetypes as being psychic, or interested in spirits, or inclined toward the occult. These descriptions, again, are just filler since they do nothing to guide the reader toward creating realistic characters. The book worked on me because I ended up buying it, which was the only purpose this author set out with. But heed this warning and don't make the same mistake.

One of the best of its kind

June O'Neill has pulled off the very difficult feat of writing a book on a cryptozoological subject and making that book balanced, readable, and highly entertaining. This thoroughly researched examination of the New England "sea serpent" story - not just the celebrated events of 1817, but all sightings, from Colonial times through the present day - is enough to make even the most hardened skeptic gaze out to sea and ponder whether we may have overlooked a spectacular discovery. O'Neill doesn't try to argue the case for a large, unknown animal. She lets the witnesses speak for her and lets the reader draw the conclusions. Bottom line: This is a marvelous book. No one with an interest in marine life, cryptozoology, or the magic and mystery of the oceans should pass it by.

A ground-breaking history book!

June O'Neill's simple journalistic approach of building suspense by listing sighting after sighting throughout the centuries is thoroughly convincing! I kept this book on my nightstand and read it through in less than a week! She touches on the peoples' lives it touched and threatened to ruin (to say you've seen a sea monster is to label yourself as a nut...) How can you deny the existence of SOMETHING in the New England waters with so many reports from so many reputable people? She caps the book with a terrible possibility. Have these marvelous creatures become extinct due to mankind's overfishing of their food supply or pollution of their oceans? This is a must-read, a document that proves that Nessie, Champ, and OTHERS exist! A groundbreaking history book!

Witnesses of Long Ago Speak, and the Reader Decides........

June O'Neill's book offers the reader an overview of the historical record, going back over 300 years, of the incidents of reported unknown aquatic animals off the coast of New England. These unknown aquatic animals, Sea Serpents, are treated through the text as narratives and described for the most part from the actual records of those reporting the animals. Hence, a rehashing of previous books and articles is not presented but a thorough historical record of New England reports is offered from the perspective of witnesses, doubters and researchers.
Others have dealt with the natural phenomenon of Sea Serpents from both regional accounts, such as Dr. Paul LeBlond and Dr. Edward Bousfield's Cadborasaurus: Survivor from the Deep (Horsdal & Schubart; Victoria. B.C.; 1995) to global accounts, such as Rupert Gould's The Case for the Sea Serpent (Philip Allan; London; 1930) and Bernard Heuvelman's In the Wake of the Sea Serpents (Hill & Wang; New York; 1965). In which reports from New England do appear as notations or selected chapters in an overview of the phenomenon. Although these mentioned books are excellent sources for their regional or global views, O'Neill's book is the first hard treatment of the New England occurrences.

Beyond just the first true New England book treatment of recent years, O'Neill's book uncovers new informational treasurers. Among these uncovered treasurers is the scrapbook of George W. Woodbury from the Cape Ann Historical Association. Within this Scrapbook #15 (as listed at the Historical Association) are accounts from personal correspondence and rare archival information of local newspaper sources. Another scrapbook was found by a Wayne Wilcox at the Calais Free Library and was a scrapbook collected by a W.W. Brown (listed as Miscellaneous Scrapbook #8 at the library).

These new items, although viewable as only more anecdotal accounts of Sea Serpents, are valuable in piecing together the history of the areas. A job O'Neill has done admirably in a stylized manner of intermingling background historical data (for example - the accounts of P.T. Barnum, ecology and history of the fishing industry and overall theories) and the original texts of the eras. These texts serve then to show the changing language and culture of the people, as well as their familiarity with the oceans, a crucial key to their livelihoods as well as an added merit to their credibility in accurate reporting.
If one comes onto the book expecting answers, one will not find them. The answers may never been uncovered, but the elements leading to those answers in New England are laid out for all to judge independently with The Great New England Sea Serpent. In her own words June O'Neill lays the framework for skeptic or believer at the close of her book:

"In the absence of an actual specimen, all is conjecture. But, if we dismiss the various "explanations" - seals, seaweed, and any number of large fish or selachians swimming in a line - offered for the New England sea serpents and take as a matter of faith that this is not a hoax of two hundred years' duration or a mass hallucinations, we are left with creatures that many individuals with significant collective knowledge of the sea and its inhabitants have described as unknown to them."
